LLOYD, Bishop William (1637-1710). A collection of seventy-seven letters and documents belonging to Bishop Lloyd, mostly relating to events concerning the non-jurors and the Dioceses of Llandaff, Peterborough and Norwich, 1664-1707 (a few later items), including a Commission signed by Archbishop Sancroft appointing Bishop Lloyd as his vicar (1691), Articles of Visitation for the Cathedrals of Canterbury and Peterborough signed 'W.Cant.' (i.e. Sancroft), letters by non-jurors, recantations, notes on ordination, reports of unrest in the City of London, petitions, complaints about the clergy, correspondence about the non-juring episcopal succession, five letters referring to the non-juring Oxford theologian, Henry Dodwell, deprived of his professorship, lists of Jacobite publications and 'controversial works' and notes on related subjects, most of the papers docketed in Bishop Lloyd's hand, a few items in Latin, approximately 228 pages, mostly 4to and folio . William Lloyd was successively Bishop of Llandaff (1675), Peterborough (1679) and Norwich (1685). He was one of the nine English Bishops who refused the Oath of Allegiance to William and Mary in 1689 and was deprived of his see. Archbishop Sancroft who refused to perform the Coronation was also deprived, and on 6 February 1691 delegated his archiepiscopal authority to Lloyd. The papers were at one time in the custody of the antiquary Browne Willis (1682-1780), biographer of Lloyd. A complete list of the items in the collection is available.
