Antwerp: Plantin, 1591. 2 volumes in one, oblong 4 o (173 x 228 mm). Indexes of plant names in Latin, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, and English. Printer's device on title-page, numerous woodcut engravings. (Title-page with repaired tear, some occasional minor marginal staining.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on front cover and spine (a few minor repairs to spine, lacking ties). Provenance : Bibliotheca Popoirschiana? (early ownership signature on front pastedown); Graf. V. und zu Hochenwarf (bookplate). Second edition, first published in 1581 in two volumes titled Plantarum seu stirpium icons The work includes illustrations from Plantin's stock of botanical blocks used to illustrate the works of Pena and L'Obel and here without the text but with the plants names supplied in Latin. The woodcuts where later reused, with some additions, in the Johnson edition of Gerard's Herbal published in1633.
