Lombard school of the 16th century Profile of a Gentleman and Face of a Lady A Pair of tempera on panel 21 x 49 cm 22 x 48,5 cm A Lombard peculiarity, these panels were used during the 15th century as decorations in Lombard palaces both as decorations on the ceiling and in the upper band of the perimeter walls. Even today there are testimonies scattered throughout the Lombardy territory: Bergamo (Church of S. Agostino), Casale Monferrato (Palace of Anna d'Alencon, Marchioness of Monferrato), Cremona (Palazzo Fodri), Brescia (Palazzo Bona). Among the most important exponents of this pictorial expression, we remember the workshops of Vincenzo Civerchio and Bonifacio Bembo. The panels from the Castle of San Martino di Gusnago are preserved both at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Other paintings are preserved in the Milanese museums Poldi Pezzoli and Castello Sforzesco.
