THE AUTHOR OF "THE CALL OF THE WILD" TO THE AUTHOR OF "THE PERILS OF PAULINE" A familiar casual pose, showing the youthful author in shirt and tie, leaning his head on his right hand, gazing directly at the camera. Charles W. Goddard (1879-1951), to whom this fine portrait is almost certainly inscribed, is best remembered for a number of broadway plays and screenplays for The Perils of Pauline (1914), The Exploits of Elaine (1914) The Ghost Breaker (1914) and many others. He collaborated with London to create a novelized version of another script, published, after London's death, as Hearts of Three (1920). The photographer Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) is famed for his images of the San Francisco earthquake (1906) and his sensitive, soft-focus portraits of many Bay area authors and artists.
