A LONDON ALS WRITTEN AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS PRODUCTIVITY AND POPULARITY. "In reply to yours of Dec. 21st," he tells Clifford, "Shall be in New York middle & last part of January. I can't make any definite engagement--am full up--but you can arrange to run into me sometime. Pardon this rush." The great success of Call of the Wild (1903) and Sea Wolf (1904) catapulted London to the fame and wealth he had so long sought. Once in the limelight he made the most of it, as this letter suggests. He traveled the world with his companion Charmian Kittredge, covered the Russo-Japanese War for the Hearst newspaper chain. Most of all he kept up a frantic pace of literary productivity. In 1906 he published his most popular work, White Fang , and completed the manuscript for his most powerful political work, The Iron Heel , which eventually appeared in 1908. Much of that work was inspired by the reporting he did in April 1906 on the catastrophic effects of the San Francisco earthquake.
