Title: Long nose splice neck play club Author: Philp, Hugh (1782-1856) Place: Publisher: Date: c.1840 Description: Long nosed splice neck driver, with original shaft (apple?) and sheepskin grip (worn). With ram's horn insert, lead back weight, and what looks like original whipping. "Hugh Philp (1782-1856) was considered to be the Stradivarius of clubmaking. Originally a woodworker in St. Andrews, he was appointed clubmaker to the R & A in 1819 and made clubs for many of the early professionals, such as Allan Robertson and Tom Morris." -Golf Antiques & Other Treasures of the Game by John & Mort Olman. He is known for training James Wilson and Robert Forgan, who took over the Philp business upon Hugh's death. Common woods used to make clubs were apple, thorn, beech and hickory. The wooden shaft was spliced onto the head and secured with the whipping. This rare club is in remarkable shape. Expected shipping cost will be a minimum of $30 for domestic, and $100 for international. Lot Amendments Condition: Worn grip, whipping may have been re-glued, very light wear; very good.
