Long Service Medals from the Collection formed by John Tamplin Five: Captain (Quartermaster) William James Elwood, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Canadian Volunteer Service Medal; War Medal 1939-45, Canadian issue in silver; Permanent Forces of the Empire L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (B.Q.M.S. (W.O. Cl. II ), R.C.A. (M.A.)); Army L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue, Canada (W.O. Cl. II (RQMS), RCHA); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (P7002 WO. Cl. II (RQMS), RCHA) surname spelt ‘Ellwood’ on last, mounted court style for wear, minor contact marks, nearly very fine and better (5) £320-360 Footnote William James Elwood was born in the Parish of Cratfield, Framlingham, Suffolk, on 20 January 1884. A long serving soldier, his service may be divided into five periods of service: With the Royal Garrison Artillery, October 1904-February 1907; in the Permanent Active Militia, February 1907-June 1918; with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, June 1918-May 1919; in the Permanent Active Militia, May 1919-August 1939, and Canadian Active Service Force, September 1939-August 1942. He was granted a commission on 12 January 1940 as a Lieutenant (Quartermaster) for duty as Quartermaster of the Artillery Training Centre, Military District 3. He was promoted to Captain (Quartermaster) on 8 March 1941. He was struck off the strength on 31 August 1942 as being unable to meet the military physical standards. For his service, he was the recipient of five medals, including the Permanent Forces of the Empire L.S. & G.C. announced in the Canada Gazette 19 January 1924; the Army L.S. & G.C. (Canada) notified in the Canada Gazette of 23 June 1945, and the Meritorious Service Medal published in the Canada Gazette of 31 August 1946. Sold with a large quantity of copied service papers.
