Original brown vertically ribbed cloth, blind stamped, spine title gilt; custom half morocco slipcase. Condition: Fore-edge slightly spotted; one small spot of loss to cloth at lower corner of spine tail, else internally unspotted, clean and tight. Provenance: Leroy Arthur Sugarman (bookplate). first american edition, first printing and a very fine copy with the necessary points, but the “n” is dropped from the line on page 279. Laid in is a 4 page ALS dated 10 June 1882 to Stoddard discussing a critical edition of Longfellow “It’s place in American literature is so assured that critical argument is futile” Bennett.
