LOT OF 2: 1859 DATED US 1860 PATTERN LIGHT CAVALRY AND NON-REG WALSCHEID

Lot consists of: (A) Civil War import non-regulation cavalry saber with steel hilt branch guard and scabbard. Incised bird's head pommel. Counterguard slotted on reverse edge. Inset "proved" disk and Walscheid Solingen stamps on ricasso. CONDITION: Good. Steel grey hilt with scattered dark grey spots overall. Shallow pitting near tip, slightly bent point. Good sharkskin and wire on grip. Scabbard dark on upper portion. Lower is grey mixed with brown. (B) Rare Ames made, 1859 dated and inspected light cavalry saber. Usually called the 1860 pattern, it was contracted for in early 1857 and deliveries started later that year. Pre-war dates of this sword are very scarce. See Thillmann, "Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers" for details. CONDITION: Poor. Hilt shows looseness. Bend to outer branch and fracture at join to counterguard. Grip lacks leather and wire, and shows wear and cracks to wood. Strand of twisted brass wire holds upper and lower halves together. Date and inspection stamps clear. Ames mark legible but rubbed. Blade light grey with dark grey and brown spots and staining. One patch of freckling. Small edge nicks. Still a good study piece or worth some restoration.
