Beschreibung:

LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) TOBLER CHOCOLAT / TOBLERONE. Circa 1925. 46 7/8x33 1/8 inches. Sonntag & Co., Munich. Condition B+: restored top right corner; minor repaired tears in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. In the 1920s, one of Hohlwein's recognizable design traits was to create a sense of depth in his posters by using a warm-colored background and a dark, colder color in the foreground. It also helped highlight individual characters or groups of figures within his designs. This poster advertising chocolate is a perfect example of this technique. An elegantly attired gentleman, with vague but discernable features, is appealing to a woman who is mysteriously not facing us. Shrouded in shadows, all that is visible in the foreground are her elegant shawl, feathers, and the distinctive package of Toblerone chocolate. It is an extremely sophisticated composition executed at the height of Hohlwein's 1920s mannerist style. Chocolate p. 68.
