LUTHER FORGERY. Manuscript in the hand of Hermann Kyrielis [c.1893-1896], of 'Das Vatter Unser', a poem in nine three-line stanzas ostensibly inscribed to 'Meynem lieben Freunde Herrn Jacob Dolly Zu Wittenberg Anno MDXXIX Martinus luther', on one page, folio , tipped in to the boards of a binding made for JACQUES-AUGUSTE DE THOU (1553-1617), late 16th-century brown morocco, gilt border, armorial stamp to upper and lower covers, 320 x 212mm. The ninety or so known Luther manuscripts forged by Hermann Kyrielis are listed in Max Hermann, Eine Feste Burg ist unser Gott (1905); the present example is no.33. Kyrielis himself was prosecuted for his activities in 1898, and eventually committed to an asylum. The De Thou binding was offered in the Canons Ashby house sale, 1980.
