Lynmouth Disaster interest; an extensive collection of black and white photographs by a good amateur photographer and resident of Lynton, Dr. M P Nightingale, taken the day after the disaster in August 1952, and following the progress of demolition and reconstruction of the town, contained within five large photograph albums, boxes, envelopes and loose. Also includes A3 size photographs from the first Fleet Street photographer on the scene, the original photographs from "Lynton & Lynmouth 'The Golden Years'", and a large quantity of contemporary newspaper cuttings. The photograph albums also contain photographs depicting family, village and working life throughout the West Country, trips to London and milestone television broadcasts circa early 1950s, together with one album of British Merchant Navy ships of the 1950s and 1960s (a lot) Note: The Lynmouth Flood occurred on the night of the 15-16 August 1952, principally affecting the village of Lynmouth, in north Devon. A storm with heavy rainfall, combined with already saturated soil and flood debris, led to the flooding of the village and a total loss of 34 lives.
