Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - a c1930s glass desktop inkwell, used by Gandhi. The inkwell of typical form, with a chequered glass base, and twin inkwells to top. One inkwell retains some dried ink. Measures approx; 8.5cm long. Provenance: (from the vendor) In the early half of 1942, my father was serving in India with the Royal Norfolk Regiment. He was ordered to Gowalia Tank in Bombay to apprehend Gandhi and to "remove the trapping of office". After Gandhi had been removed, the effects from his office were disbanded as souvenirs and he took this inkwell that Gandhi had been using on his desk. A lengthy typed document from the vendor accompanies the lot, which gives further specific details (available to the successful bidder only). Gandhi was a prolific letter writer - this inkwell serves as an important connection to this characteristic. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father).
