Titles printed in red and black, 2 with engraved arms of the Royal Society, engraved portrait, 2 allegorical frontispieces and 142 plates (some browning and foxing, a few rust-holes and rust-stains). Contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum, red morocco lettering piece on spine (a few light stains on covers). Provenance : A. de Grateloup early 18th-century signature on front paste-down endpaper) -- Pierre de Chaludet (large 18th-century armorial bookplate).

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION and a fine production of the Royal Society. 'Malpighi was the founder of histology and the greatest of the microscopists. In 1660 he was the first to see the capillary anastomosis between the arteries and the veins, thus helping the completion of Harvey's work on the circulation. He was a great embryologist: his name is perpetuated in the "Malpighian bodies", "Malpighi's layer" of the edidermis, "Malpighi's (spenic) corpuscles"' Garrison-Morton 66. Wing M342a, M644, M352.
