Folk art, soldier carved pipe, medium in size, wood dark in color and nicely grained, possibly laurel root. Max. width approx. 3.5 inches. Bowl height 2.625 inches. Bowl dia. 1.625 inches. Entire upper bowl from center to rim high relief carved with very simple large leaf motif. Each leaf is affixed to a single branch that encircles all of the leaves. Lower half of bowl high relief carved: MANASSAS PLAINS JULY 21 over second line 1861. Underside of bowl (just below the 1861 date) with 4 / ALA (indicating 4th Alabama) carved in high relief. The 4th Alabama Regiment was organized at Dalton, GA., in May 1861, just weeks after shots were fired on Ft. Sumter. The 4th soon moved into Virginia under the command of Confederate Col. Egbert Jones. It participated in the Battle of First Manassas (also known as First Battle of Bull Run) on July 21, 1861, which was the first major battle of the Civil War. The Alabama 4th took a prominent part in the battle as part of General Barnard Elliott Bee's Third Brigade of the Army of the Shenandoah. Later the 4th Alabama would fight with distinction at Cold Harbor, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Inventory tag affixed along bottom of shank. Some light soiling in crevices. Clearly used, but in very fine condition overall. Patina nice, rich.
