MANBY, George William (1765-1854). Journal of a Voyage to Greenland, in the Year 1821 . London: G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1822. The first edition of this beautifully illustrated whaling journal. Manby recounts the whaling expedition with Captain Scoresby on the ship Baffin in the summer of 1821 which had the express purpose of testing a new harpoon design by Scoresby. The voyage took them first to Spitzbergen, then along the east coast of Greenland, to Iceland and home. The work contains a lithographed map of the polar region from Baffin's Bay to Nova Zembla with Iceland in the center and some very fine whaling scenes by J.D. Harding (1797-1863) printed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850). These lithographs are very early examples of lithography in England. Arctic Bib. 10844 (2nd ed.); Chavanne 5285; Sabin 44195. Quarto (270 x 213mm). Folding lithographed map partially handcolored; 20 lithographed plates, one of which is folding by J.D. Harding, numerous wood-engraved illustrations (scattered foxmarks, chiefly to plate margins and facing text pages, light foxing to map). Contemporary diced calf gilt (rebacked to style with new endpapers, repair to corners). Provenance : Shapero Rare Books.
