MANGLES, James (1786-1867). Papers and Despatches relating to the Arctic Searching Expeditions of 1850-51-52 . Together with a Few Brief Remarks as to the Probable Course Pursued by Sir John Franklin London: Francis & John Rivington, 1852. The very rare second edition of 1852, greatly expanded and with new reports. The first edition of 1851 contains "17 brief items concerning the Franklin search." This edition contains 46 items, being "excerpts from magazines, newspapers, official despatches, letters, reports, and narratives of expeditions, concerning the Northwest Passage, the Franklin Search (then in progress), the north polar sea, routes to the Pole, wintering experiences, animals and place names" (Arctic Bib.). This source book is rare at auction, with only two or three copies in the records since 1920. Arctic Bib. 10849; Sabin 44251; TPL 3282. Octavo (222 x 140mm). 3 color maps. Original blue cloth stamped in gilt and blind (mild darkening). Provenance : W.S. Crampton (inkstamp to f.f.e.) – Maggs Bros. Ltd.
