Title: Manuscript Document Signed by Benning Wentworth as Governor of New Hampshire, being a marriage certificate Author: Wentworth, Benning Place: Portsmouth, NH Publisher: Date: Dec. 1, 1760 Description: 14 lines, in ink, docketed on verso; on sheet 10.5x16.5 cm. (8¼x6½"). The manuscript form authorizes an ordained minister of the Province of New Hampshire to join in Holy Matrimony Richard Elllis and Ann Shepard, with the names and date filled in, signed B. Wentworth. Benning Wentworth (1696-1770) served as governor of the colonial Province of New Hampshire from 1741 to 1766. He made his fortune selling land in what is now the state of Vermont to developers, in spite of jurisdictional claims for this region by the Colony of New York. He named the new townships after famous contemporaries in order to gain support for his enterprises (e.g. Rutland after John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland; Bennington he named after himself).
