Title: Manuscript Document Signed, June 22nd 1776 Author: Phelps, Noah, Capt. Place: Hartford, CT Publisher: Date: June 25, 1776 Description: Autograph pay order on single leaf 16.5x21 cm. (6½x8¼"). Pay order to Capt. Noah Phelps "as paymaster to his own company now to be raisd to join the Continental Army at Boston - One Hundred & seventy two pounds." Signed by T. Seymour and O. Ellsworth as members of Connecticut's Pay Table Committee and countersigned by John Laurence as Treasurer of Connecticut. Endorsed by Phelps on the verso. Phelps is best remembered for his role in identifying the weaknesses on the British defenses at Fort Ticonderoga where he disguised himself as a peddler seeking a shave and gained access to the fort and was able to engage himself in conversation with the fort's commander who revealed to him that their store of powder had been damaged. The fort was captured without casualty on either side. Lot Amendments Condition: Horizontal creases; fine. Item number: 210317
