Title: Manuscript log book kept on two round-trip voyages from England to India Author: Young, John William Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1795-1796 & 1801-1802 Description: Approx. 150 leaves. Printed log forms filled in ink. 37.2x24 cm. (14¾x9½”), split calf. Log book kept by John William Young who identifies himself as a midshipman for aboard the Honourable East India Company ship for the first voyage, and undoubtedly has risen in the ranks for the second. The first voyage is aboard the Marquis of Lansdown, with two months' preparation described in detail before departing on June 18th, 1795. Young describes the weather, sailing conditions and general activities. Arriving in India in December, the ship outfits at Diamond Harbour, and departs in the middle of February for England, arriving in early August. Some four years later, we find Young coming aboard the Rose, evidently as second officer, and after outfitting at Deptford, the ship leaves for India, arriving at the and of May, 1801, and again outfitting at Diamond Harbour before departing in early August. With the bookplate of the South Sea Library of Alvin and Ethel Seale, San Francisco, 1936; a typed label, formerly taped to the spine, is laid in. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine worn, torn, a number of leaves at rear loose, as few possibly lacking; overall very good. Item number: 211798
