Title: Map of the City of San Francisco Compiled from Records & Surveys by R.P. Bridgens Author: Bridgens, R[ichard] P[erkins] Place: Philadelphia Publisher: M. Bixby Date: 1854 Description: Lithographed wall map with hand-coloring. 140x185 cm (55x72¾") including surrounding vignettes and borders; glued down on plywood backing, massive wooden frame under plexiglass; overall 167x210 cm (65¾x82¾"). Excessively rare and exceptionally large wall map of San Francisco, notable for its grand dimensions and the wonderful vignettes of the city’s landmarks and magnificent architecture. Bridgens’ map is probably the largest of the city of San Francisco published up to that time. The earliest printed map of the town of San Francisco was made by William Matson Eddy in 1849. The present map, made only five years later, shows a dramatically transformed city due to the enormous economic, social, and political changes which came to the region in quantum leaps. Only a handful of examples of the map are known to exist. Warren Heckrotte, unpublished “Preliminary List of Maps of San Francisco” 48; Peters, California on Stone, pp. 58 & 102; Ristow, American Maps & Mapmakers, p. 457. This map has been on loan to, and displayed at, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society at the Old Mint for the last ten years, on loan by the current owner, who now consigns it to auction. Because of the large size and weight of this map, we will not ship it - it must be picked up at our galleries at 1233 Sutter Street in San Francisco. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing and wear particularly to the lower foot or so, publication date rubbed off; lower corners cut off affecting some vignettes but not the map image, stain at lower center of the map affecting vignettes and bay and some of the map image; further information on condition, please contact the galleries. Not examined out of frame. Item number: 261703
