Title: Map Showing Property of South San Francisco Land and Improvement Co at South San Francisco, San Mateo County, California Author: South San Francisco Land & Improvement Co. Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: 1907 Description: Lithographed map, printed in color. Compiled and Drawn by Punnett Bros. Lithographed by Britton & Rey. 68.5x48.8 cm (27x19¼"). Warren Heckrotte describes the map, and compares it to an earlier map from the company: "The main map shows South San Francisco. The inset shows the peninsula from South San Francisco to the Golden Gate and the East Bay. Unlike the earlier map this shows South San Francisco in proper proportion. There have been some changes in the boundary and an addition of land on the south side. Less land is laid out in streets and blocks. A number of industries are now located in South San Francisco. The area of the Stockyard is less than before." He further comments: "The site of the city was selected by G. F. Swift and purchased by Peter Iler of Omaha in 1890, in order to replicate the cattle stockyards and marketplaces common in Omaha. They partnered with some Chicago backers and formed two joint stock corporations, one named South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company, while the other branch was known as the Western Meat Company." No copies of the map are located by OCLC/WorldCat. Provenance: Old World Auction, 5/7/08 Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds, a few repaired tears, some spotting in places; very good overall. Item number: 271293
