Although the first two volumes had originally been printed in Nuremberg in 1679 and 1683, the third -- entitled Die rupsen Begin -- was only published posthumously in Amsterdam in 1717, the year of the author's death. The present work contains the plates to all three parts with text in Latin, it was available with the plates coloured or, as here, uncoloured. The first folio editions were the separate Dutch and French language editions which J. F. Bernard issued in 1730. Ultimately, it became part of the Histoire gnrale des insectes de Surinam et de toute l'Europe , issued by the Paris publisher, L. C. Desnos, in 2 volumes, 1777. Cf. Landwehr 135 (coloured copy); Nissen BBI , 1342; Wettengl, Maria Sibylla Merian p.247 cat. no. 155.
