Le Cabinet des fées].
Amsterdam, 1783-1789. Complete separate suite of 120 copper engravings after Pierre-Clément Marillier. 8vo (190 x 130 mm). Later full red morocco, spine gilt. Condition : edges rubbed, joints starting and head of spine chipped. The famous encyclopedia of literary contes de fées , issued at the twilight of the French monarchy, is perhaps the most ambitious illustrated fairy tale collection ever published. Andrew Lang often turned to the Cabinet for selections for his Color Fairy Books. “This great plenitude of fairy tales from all quarters,” he noted in his preface to The Olive Fairy Book (1907), “presents legends of fairies, witches, geni or Djinn, monsters, dragons, wicked stepmothers, princesses pretty or plain, princes lucky or unlucky, giants, dwarfs, and enchantments.” Consequently, the Cabinet taxed Mariller’s gifts as an artist and he produced one of the greatest series of fairy tale illustrations. It is like a last glimpse of the Ancien Régime.
