Type: 2:114R. 4-line initials in red; text with contemporary rubrication, woodcut with light contemporary colouring. (Minor repair to f.1r, smudge of red ink from rubrication on f.2v.) Modern brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf, with blind fillet decoration to boards and turn-ins, title lettered gilt on spine, edges gilt (corners and joints very lightly rubbed, a few slight scratches on lower board). One of only three books belonging to Lignamini's short-lived second press, active in Rome between 1481 and 1484 (see BMC IV.131); Lignamini, the first native-born printer in Italy, signs the prefatory epistle to Pope Sixtus IV, and seems to have been the editor as well as the printer of this work. The book was evidently published to commemorate Bonaventure's canonisation in 1482, and the full-page woodcut at the beginning brings together a fine assemblage of late medieval devotional images: it depicts the saint standing before the Tree of Life, surmounted with a crucifix and a pelican-in-her-piety, alongside an image of the sun with the IHS emblem, and the crossed hands of Jesus with wounds.
