Beschreibung:

Horizontorium.
Philadelphia: R. H. Hobson, 1832. Lithograph by J. J. Barker (565 x 440 mm). Condition: lower left corner torn away, edges lightly worn. Provenance : Martin P. Snyder. a rare american horizontorium, a 19th century version of modern art. "This interesting view of the structure was called an 'Horizontorium' which was a print that could be seen with normal proportions only when viewed at an angle. European views of this type are well known, but this is the only recorded example of an American published ‘Horizontorium.’ This is also one of only two known images of the Philadelphia Bank, the other being the print issued by William Birch in 1809. William Mason specialized in scenes of Philadelphia architecture, getting his start working with Childs on his Views of Philadelphia. It is likely that this image was printed at Childs' shop" (Wohl Collection). Wainwright 178; Wohl Collection 102.
