Venice: Ex Officina Valgrisiana, 1570. 2 o (317 x 212 mm). Over 1200 woodcuts in text, including over 300 new woodcuts appearing for the first time. (Leaf GG1 with tear with small loss affecting side-note, a few others with small marginal tears touching text, title page and last text leaf mounted on verso, some leaves stained or dampstained, a few marginal notes in an early hand in ink.) Later calf gilt, (worn, extremities rubbed, chipping with loss at head and foot of spine). Provenance : Joannis Boloti (inscription dated 1648 on second flyleaf); Ms. Pacaw? (inscription on title); Mayeir Guinbert (inscription on 2 D6). An expanded edition, with Mattioli's Latin translation of Dioscorides , with "De ratione distillandi aquas ex omnibus plantis..." at end. A careful student of botany, Mattioli described 100 new plants and coordinated and consolidated the medical botany of his time in his Commentaries .
