Maurice and Edward Detmold's precocious talent led to their exhibiting watercolours at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the age of 13, where they were spotted by Edward Burne-Jones Subsequently they mastered various techniques with watercolours, etchings and drawings, and turned these to effective use in book illustration.
