MAWSON EXPEDITION, autograph letter signed, by Sidney Jeffries, to Maisie Eckford, 12 pages, dated 'Ararat, July 14th [1914?]', 8vo Sidney Jeffries originally applied to join Mawson's expedition in 1911 but was rejected. He applied again in 1912 to Captain Davis, not mentioning the previous application, and was accepted as Radio Operator. In the winter of 1913 he had a mental breakdown in Antarctica putting the entire expedition in some danger. In 1914 he was brought back to Australia and committed to the Ararat Institution.
