Hart, 1855. 3 volumes, 8 o (259 x 170 mm). 120 hand-colored lithographed plates by J.T. Bowen, most after Charles Bird King (Light staining to a few plates, otherwise very clean with colors fine and fresh.) Original publisher's red gilt-stamped morocco, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, gilt-decorated in the rest, edges gilt (light rubbing to joints, some darkening to spines). Provenance : Maxine and Joel Spitz, Chicago (bookplate). Early octavo edition. First published in this reduced format in 1850, following the folio edition of 1836-1844. The plates, which Howes describes as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed," are from King's portraits in the Indian Gallery, Department of War, Washington, which were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. The octavo edition contained an additional plate of "Red Bird," used as the frontispiece to volume II, besides additions to the biographies. Howes M-129; Sabin 43411 Howes M-129; Sabin 43411.
