Medals from the Collection of the late Mike Minton Three: Chief Inspector Alfred P. 'Jack' Allen, Birmingham City Police DEFENCE MEDAL; CORONATION 1953; POLICE EXEMPLARY SERVICE MEDAL, G.VI.R. (Inspr.) mounted as worn, good very fine (3) Footnote Inspector Alfred Percy Allen, better known as Jack, was reputed to be Birmingham's biggest bobby, weighing in at a burly 19 stone. He joined the service in 1925 and after working on the beat and with the city centre based Vice Squad, became a sergeant in 1935. His move then to Moseley Street police station marked the beginning of 30 years' continuous service in the Balsall Heath area. He was a qualified bomb reconnaissance officer during the war and received an award from the Watch Committee for courageous conduct during the blitz, one of 18 awards made to him during his career. He rose to the rank of Chief Inspector in 1956 and retired in 1966. Sold with further research including several newspaper cuttings.
