MEDICI, Catherine de (1519-1589), Queen of France . Letter signed ("Caterine"), to an unidentified recipient, St. Maur, 28 January 1563. 1 page, folio, dispatch slits, light foxing and staining . In French. Three years into her Regency, following the death of her husband Henry II, Catherine here summons an unidentified court member to discuss the King's affairs. Catherine acted as regent for her son Charles IX. Catherine is notorious for being the mastermind behind the large-scale massacre of Huguenots in 1872, the St. Bartholomew Day massacre. In all as many as 70,000 French Protestants may have been killed throughout the country.
