MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE CROSS GROUP Circa 15th century-19th century AD. A medieval Knights of the Holy Sepulchre repoussé pilgrim badge of cross crosslet form; and a Georgian carnelian seal mounted in a silver block with polished stone handle, depicting the Dome on the Rock and Holy Sepulchre, a star and cross crosslet with Hebrew text below. Badge: 0.73 grams, 21 mm; seal: 19 grams, 63 mm. Very fine condition, complete. [2, No Reserve] Provenance From the private collection of a Bedfordshire Gentleman, UK; acquired prior to 1985. Literature Mitchener, M. Medieval Pilgrim and Secular Badges , London, 1986 p.244 items 939-42. Footnotes This crusading chivalric order was founded by Godfrey de Bouillon in the First Crusade and was active in the eastern Mediterranean from the later 11th century into the 16th century. The order was granted the island of Malta by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V from 1530.
