MEIRI, Menahem ben Solomon (Provence; 1249-1316). Kiryat Sefer (on writing Sifrei Torah ), MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [England, 19th century] 2 o (315 x 190 mm). On ruled paper. [2] + 50 leaves, with original Hebrew foliation in ink and modern lead pencil foliation. Dark brown ink. Ashkenazic cursive script. (Some staining and soiling, last pages with frayed edges, affecting single letters, generally good condition.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco, two flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: Fols. [1]r: blank; [1]v: 'This Book is made for Bills to write in Jacob Mordecai Gedilie Berliner'; [2]r: title-page (copied from earlier manuscript); [2]v: blank; 1r-47r: text; 47v-48v: blank; 49rv: three letters in English and Hebrew by Solomon Hirschell, 1837; [50]rv: blank. This manuscript is an extract copied from MS Gaster 659, now in the John Rylands University Library in Manchester. The date and the name of the scribe (Raphael ben Joseph of Cairo) appearing on fol. [2]r were copied from the Gaster manuscript as well (correcting the information provided by Neubauer). This manuscript retains only a small part of this halakhic treatise on the laws of writing Torah scrolls, which was published in Izmir 1863-1881. PROVENANCE: 1. Solomon Hirschell, 1837. 2.
