Caroline of Brunswick, whose marriage to her cousin George, Prince of Wales (George III) was a matter of expediency, became the object of charges of adultery and other inappropriate behaviours. After producing a child, she and her husband decamped to separate homes. While George enjoyed a quiet but well-known relationship with a mistress, Caroline's own household was notoriously riotous and her promiscuity became a royal embarassment.
