Title: Memoirs of Miss C.E. Cary: written by herself, who was retained in the service of the late Queen Caroline, to fill the situation in Her Majesty's household next to Lady Anne Hamilton; containing interesting anecdotes of some of the first persons in this country, and an exposition of the recrimination, intended to have been brought forward by the late queen's party, but which was prevented by Miss Cary; with proofs and documents in support of the facts . Author: Cary, Miss C[atherine] E. Place: London Publisher: T. Traveller Date: 1825 Description: 3 volumes. xiii, 394; [2], 244; [2], 145, [6], cxlix. Copper engraved portrait frontispiece in first volume. (8vo) 8½x5, period half calf and marbled boards, gilt spines. First Edition. Rare memoir of the "Queen Caroline affair." Caroline of Brunswick, whose marriage to her cousin George, Prince of Wales (George III) was a matter of expediency, became the object of charges of adultery and other inappropriate behaviours. After producing a child, she and her husband decamped to separate homes. While George enjoyed a quiet but well-known relationship with a mistress, Caroline's own household was notoriously riotous and her promiscuity became a royal embarassment. She did, however, have her supporters, among them Miss Cary. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints and edges rubbed; lettering pieces mostly absent; foxing, still presentable and near very good. Item number: 171255
