Date: 1820 Description: 247 pp. 8vo. Period half dark green leather & marbled boards, hand-lettered paper spine label. First Edition. The memoirs of a Connecticut-born clergyman who traveled to the South in the early 1800’s and became interested in the conditions of the blacks. Mills went to England to talk to the leaders of the anti-slavery movement and in 1818, sailed to Africa where he negotiated with local chiefs in selecting territory for the future colony of Liberia. He is remembered as the father of foreign missionary work in the United States (Reese 52). Afro-Americana 9494; Clark, II, 167; Howes S-851; Sabin 89771; Shoemaker 3293. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers somewhat worn, rubbed with some loss at fore-corners and extremities of spine; hinges tender, paper browning, foxing, but a sound copy; else very good.
