Beschreibung:

MERCATOR, Gerard & HONDIUS, Jodocus. Atlas Minor , Amsterdam, [1609] Oblong 8° (180 x 230 mm.), text in German, engraved Latin title, allegorical plate and 152 MAPS (most with text on verso) ALL IN FULL CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING (lacking printed German title and 3 pp. text; a little soiling and staining, mainly in margins; engraved title torn and repaired with some loss; allegorical plate and first 7 maps with marginal tears and defects repaired). Contemporary blind-stamped vellum with central arabesque on sides (rebacked, preserving original backstrip; rather stained and worn) The first German edition of Mercator's Atlas Minor , first published in Latin in 1607. Shortly after the publication of the big folio-atlases, there was a demand for handier and cheaper smaller format atlases, accessible to a larger public and the publication of Hondius' Atlas Minor was a great success as can be seen by the numerous editions published over many years in many languages. Koeman II Me 188
