Contemporary blind-stamped vellum with central arabesque on sides (rebacked, preserving original backstrip; rather stained and worn) The first German edition of Mercator's Atlas Minor , first published in Latin in 1607. Shortly after the publication of the big folio-atlases, there was a demand for handier and cheaper smaller format atlases, accessible to a larger public and the publication of Hondius' Atlas Minor was a great success as can be seen by the numerous editions published over many years in many languages.
