A magnificent and rare collection of natural history works gathered together by Desnos to include plates from some of the most important botanical and ornithological works of the 17th and 18th centuries by Maria Sibylla Merian Daniel Rabel and J. Jonston. Together 4 volumes containing Merian's 'Histoire générale des Insectes de Surinam et de toute l'Europe' in the last edition (two volumes with engr. front. and 325 contemp. hand-coloured engravings on 188 plates); the fourth edition of Rabel's famous 'Theatrum florae' (one volume with 69 contemp. hand-coloured plates); Jonston's 'Histoire naturelle et raisonnée des différens oiseaux qui habitent le globe' (one volume with 85 contemp. hand-coloured engr. plates). - Overall a fine copy with wide margins. Some browning and spotting in places, small old number to lower blank margin of all plates in vol. 1-3. Few small marginal tears, first plate folded in on the left and with marginal browning, crease mark to pl. 2 and 3, restored tear and small hole to pl. 48, restored tear to pl. 72. Uniformly bound in contemporary green vellum, some rubbing, extremities somewhat worn, joints partly repaired.
