The Cushing diplomatic mission described in the preceding item led to the signing on July 3, 1844, of the Treaty of Wang Hiya, the first commercial accord between the United States and the Chinese Empire, which gave American merchants in China the same rights as the dominant British businessmen. One of its provisions outlawed the Opium trade, which had already enriched more than one Yankee entrepreneur. This imprint includes the diplomatic correspondence concerning negotiation of the Treaty.
