Messelornis cristata Middle Eocene Messel, near Frankfurt, Germany Messelornis, a Gruiformes bird, is closely related to cranes and rails. Its wings were short, yet its legs were long, indicating that it was a wading bird that searched the shoreline for small invertebrates, frogs and lizards. Only adults have been found in the oil shales of Messel, indicating that Messelornis nested far away from the lake. The Messel deposit is considered a Konservat-Lagerstatte, literally meaning conservation warehouse, in reference to its exceptionally preserved fossils. A beautiful specimen.
