MEYER, Conrad Ferdinand (1825-1898). Autograph letter signed ('C. Ferd. Meyer') to an unidentified recipient [the Bern publisher Rudolf Buri], Meilen near Zurich, 30 April 1874, in violet ink, one page, 8vo , on a bifolium, docketed by recipient on verso of f.2. Meyer expresses his regret that he cannot provide 'a short epic poem' for the recipient's Swiss Miniature Almanach because of his previous commitments to write the novels Jürg Jenatsch and Der Heilige : 'Mit wahrer Lust würde ich für Ihren Almanach ein kleines episches Gedicht entwerfen, wäre ich nicht langehinaus durch zwei längst begonnene u. längst meinem Verlege zugesagte sogenannte "histor. Romane" von größerem Umfang in Anspruch genommen'. The two historical novels (the genre to which Meyer owes his popularity) referred to concern, respectively, the Thirty Years' War and Thomas Becket.
