MEYER, Henry Leonard (1797-1865). Coloured Illustrations of British Birds and their Eggs. London: G.W.Nickisson (vols.I-II); Simpkin, Marshall & Co. (vols.III-V & VII); Willis & Sotheran (vol.VI), 1842-1850. 7 volumes, 8° (217 x 135mm). Wood-engraved title vignettes, 322 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES OF BIRDS, 105 hand-coloured lithographed plates of eggs and 8 uncoloured anatomical plates after Meyer by Meyer and Mary Ann Moor Meyer. Contemporary dark green morocco gilt, g.e. A VERY FINE COPY OF THE OCTAVO EDITION, mixed issue. The cost of the preceding 4° editions and the importance of the work persuaded Meyer to issue this reduced version: making it "the most complete and cheapest History of British Birds ever published" (see preface). It was a success, and a new edition was published between 1853 and 1857. Mullens and Swann p.403; Nissen VB 628. (7)
