Mexico City, The Genius of Miguel Covarrubias , 1991, cat.no. 2. Jos Miguel Covarrubias is the author of the well regarded Island of Bali published in 1937. The book touches on anthropological and archeological subjects of Bali and is supplemented with beautiful illustrations drawn by the author himself; to a large extent it had contributed to a Balinese craze in New York City throughout the late thirties. Fernando Blanco, a catalonian painter called the "Dali of Bali" spoke of the penetrating power of the book "This man was able to penetrate Bali as no other foreigner, including many of those who lived and worked in Bali for longer periods than Miguel. Island of Bali is the bible of Bali. This great, great book this informative book with its wonderful stylized illustrations is superb because Miguel with his mexican eyes and soul was touched." The stylization and slightly dramatized lines of the present two lots are reminiscent of Covarrubias' work as one of New York most successful caricaturists. The onlooker is constantly amazed at the uncanny power of penetrating and satire displayed through the deceptively simple lines. - Paper laid down on board. - On wove paper, water mark Collins S.R.W. Bond, laid down with two pieces of paper tape along reversed upper corners. - Minor retouches on the outer edges to be obscured by frame. - Sheet only slightly discoloured. - Several faint tiny fox marks, mainly to the laft part of the sheet.
