The birth of PHILIP PROSPERO of Spain (b.1657), Prince of Asturias to Philip IV, King of Spain and his wife Maria Anna, the first son born to the couple and the presumable heir to the Spanish throne was a cause for much celebration. Festivities in Milan in February and March of 1658 marked the occasion and included tournaments and fireworks, and the city's public squares and buildings were elaborately decorated with statuary and draped in tapestries. Descriptions explaining the significance of the 27 engraved emblems are included in the text and the allegorical monument erected in the Piazza del Duomo in Milan is illustrated in the engraved plate by Agnelli. Unfortunately, the young prince would never become king, dying in 1661 at the age of four.
