[Report on the Military Settlements for 1824.] St. Petersburg: at the Press of the Headquarters of the Military Settlements, 1825. 2 vols, 4° (237 x 189mm, and 240 x 189mm). (Some spotting.) Contemporary blue half leather, and contemporary red half leather (extremities rubbed). FIRST EDITIONS of these two rare works on the military settlements. These colonies combined military service and agricultural employment, and were introduced by Alexander I in 1810 to create a large reserve of trained military forces. From 1817 Count Aleksei Arakcheev was in charge of all military settlements in Russia, and by 1825 settlements had been established, against much opposition, in St. Petersburg, Novogorod, Slobozhanshchina, and many other regions. RARE: WorldCat records only one copy of the first work outside Russia, at the University of Virginia, and none of the second. (2)
