ca 1870s. Highly-polished black patent jacked leather cap with brass eagle planchet with patriotic shield on its breast. Eagle is shown clutching an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. Replacement overlapping brass scales and leather band chinstrap connect to the helmet by replacement brass button with five-pointed star in relief. The edges of the trencher top (or mortar board) and the visor both complete with brass bands. Rear corner of trencher top presents a small brass United States heraldic crest with a hook. Interior of helmet with brown leather sweatband interlaced by a drawstring. Overall height 8.5" This form of hat was originally influenced by the Polish Lancers in 1807 when they entered French service to fight with Napoleon's Armies. These foreign soldiers wore their native Polish uniforms and this style of hat. The Lancer cap was never very popular in the United States.
