MILNE, A. A.] SHEPARD, ERNEST H., illustrator . Original pen and ink drawing for "Explained," showing Lord High Doodelum awakened in bed. Circa 1927. 105 x 189 mm. (4 1/8 x 7 3/8 in.), mount remnants on verso; matted. Signed in ink at lower left ("E.H. Shepard"). The drawing was used to illustrate the poem from Now We Are Six (1927), where it appears on p. 79 below the lines: "She ran to London and knocked at the door Of the Lord High Doodelum's coach-and-four. 'Please, sir (if there's anyone in), However-and-ever did God begin?'" Provenance : The Sporting Gallery, London, December 1927; purchased from Marshall Field's in 1979 by the present owner.
