MILOS ALEXANDER BAZOVSKY (1899–1968) THE ROAD AT STREČNO Starting price: 350 000 CZK (12 963 EUR) Hammer price: 350 000 CZK (12 963 EUR) Description dimensions: 35 x 50 cm (h x w) period: 1929, Slovakia The painting likely dates from 1929, which was a watershed year for Bazovský. That year he visited France and became acquainted with modern French painting; the work of Paul Gauguin left a particularly strong impression on him. After he returned to Slovakia, he started to focus intensively on Slovak themes. His paintings took on an earthier tone, combined with green and blue. The provenance of this painting is the family of Josef Georg Tajovský, a renowned Slovak author, playwright and poet who long lived and worked in Martin, a city that was home to many modern Slovak painters, including Bazovský. Tajovský retained a relationship to the city even after he left for Bratislava in 1925. Bazovský personally gave the painting to Josef Tajovský as a gift. Oil on canvas, signed on bottom right "Bazovský", dedication and date on back stretcher frame.
