Top of the line in Scott's model range for the 1930 season was the Sprint Special, described by the late Jeff Clew as 'to many the most sleek and handsome of the open frame models to leave the Saltaire Works'. Scott's own marketing described it as 'for the elect of speedmen who, despite the obvious costliness, demand a machine built to their special order to embody all their pet fancies, hitherto divided among our various models, the Special is our gratifying answer. Designed for grass track racing and hill climbs, this intriguing Scott is equally fitted to any purpose where speed, liveliness and sure-footedness are essential.' The Sprint Special featured a single downtube frame rather than the heavier duplex tube frame of the rest of the Scott range. It was built in the Competition Department at Saltaire and the customer selected his own specification choosing wheelbase, type of fuel tank and forks, while selecting also engine compression ratio, gear ratios, carburettor and exhaust system. The Sprint Special was a truly bespoke machine, costing £11 more at £95 than the next machine in the range, the TT Replica. In the Scott world the 1930 Sprint Special is considered the ultimate Scott from the vintage era. This bike was despatched on 30th April 1930, its first owner being the audacious Miss E Sturt who campaigned the machine almost immediately on taking delivery in the arduous Scottish Six Days Trial in May 1930, winning a Silver Medal for her efforts. She was featured in Scott advertising with this machine and it was noted that her 'riding was admired throughout the whole of this arduous Trial.' The machine's full history is not recorded but in the 1960's it was in the ownership of the late Jim Noble, a squirrel-like collector from Chapel Allerton, near Leeds. Jim's collection of vintage bikes, including several Scotts, was legendary and was dispersed at auction in 1999 following his death. WX 4053 was acquired then by the present owner, a well-known Scott aficionado, and during this ownership has been used enthusiastically, although it has been laid up for the last two or three years. Like all competition machines WX 4053 has had minor modifications carried out over the years to enhance performance – and why not with a machine designed as a front-runner and proven to be so in the hands of Miss E Sturt. The bike comes with a nice history file recording the restoration of this and other Scotts during the thirty or so year ownership of the late Jim Noble. It comes also with a copy of The Motor Cycle advertisement from 22nd May 1930 showing Miss Sturt with WX 4053. This truly historic Scott comes also with a Swansea registration document and a number of expired MoT certificates.
