Missal. Use of Sarum
Missale ad usum ac consuetudinem Sarum. [Paris: Wolfgang Hopyl and Franciscus Birckmann in London, 28 November 1514]
folio (345 x 231mm.), printed in red and black throughout, title-page with large woodcut illustration within woodcut border, woodcut initials and illustrations, typeset music, references to Thomas a Becket crossed through, leaves v3-4 with the Canon of the Mass printed on vellum with a full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion, woodcut border to A1 and [2]A1, large woodcut on final verso (defective), old (original?) wooden boards with modern calf spine, two clasps, first two quires skilfully repaired at edges with around a quarter of the title-page in facsimile, lacking k2, repairs to leaves v5-6 and quire x and [2]D3-4, final quire with extensive skilful repairs with loss of text, a few wormholes in boards, one strap broken
There are early manuscript notes on leaves v3-4, in Latin and English, "Pray for the soule of Sir George Lawson knight somtyme treasurer of this town".

PROVENANCE:George Lawson (c. 1493-1543), alderman of York, inscriptions on v3-4 (he was seemingly a Protestant with connections to Thomas Cromwell, who assisted him in acquiring monastic properties after the Dissolution); Ampleforth Abbey library, bookplate
